Notice during the busy season (October to March of the following year) (points expiration, account expiration, data transfer, etc.)

2020.9.7

【Precautions during the busy season (2020 edition)】

As the deadlines for the thesis and master's thesis approach, utilization rate will increase, and job waiting time get longer, then fewer opportunities to perform the jobs. We ask that you plan your use of the system well in advance.

The following is a summary of what we consider to be particularly important during the busy season, and we ask all users to read it carefully.

  1. Make Wall time(h_rt) as short as possible
  2. TSUBAME points expire at the end of the fiscal year
  3. Account Expiration Date
  4. Request for data transfer upon graduation or transfer
  5. End of Year Maintenance
  6. Changes to the maximum value of resource occupancy during the busy season

1.Make Wall time(h_rt) as short as possible

Jobs are basically executed in the order of their submission. If a parallel job is to be executed next, even if the number of available nodes is less than the number of computation nodes, those nodes do nothing and wait until the number of nodes are available. If a job with a short time specified as the Wall Time is submitted after this parallel job, the parallel jobs are scheduled to fill in this gap, so the waiting time may be shortened (backfill). If the Wall Time value is unnecessarily large, a job that could have been executed may not fill this gap, and resources may be wasted. Please specify a value closer to the actual execution time and submit a job.

2.TSUBAME points expire at the end of the fiscal year

TSUBAME points are valid until the end of the fiscal year. Excess TSUBAME points expire at the end of the fiscal year and are non-refundable and non-transferable. Please note that they will not be available until March 31 due to maintenance at the end of the fiscal year.

3.Account Expiration Date

The period of validity of the account for the use of student ID card, staff ID card, and preferred access card is the period of validity of the Tokyo Tech IC card, as stipulated in the "Tokyo Tech Academic and International Information Center Detailed Regulations for the Computer System". However, please note that the period of validity will not be extended until March 31 due to maintenance work at the end of the academic year.

4.Request for data transfer upon graduation or transfer

Every year, we receive many inquiries about data transfer, and we cannot read the data needed for future research.

We believe that the data created by users belong to the users, and that the users themselves have an obligation to manage, take over, and delete the data appropriately.

In principle, GSIC refuses to move or restore the data because it is very dangerous to operate the various data with administrative privileges one by one, as they differ in size, number of files and directory structure. In fact, there are cases where tens of millions of files exist in some groups and it is impossible for GSIC to handle them individually.

Before your account becomes invalid, please retrieve the data to the lab or set the appropriate permissions on the group disk to make the data readable and writable for the group members. Also, please delete unnecessary data as much as possible.

5.End of Year Maintenance

The specific date is still undecided, but we usually perform end-of-year maintenance for about a week during the last week of March to the first week of April. You will not be able to log in at all during the maintenance, so please pay attention to the announcements in the future so that you do not panic if you cannot retrieve your data in time. In particular, if your IC card expires during the maintenance, you will not be able to access your data at all even after the system is back in operation.

6.Changes to the maximum value of resource occupancy during the busy season

As in previous years, the number of parallel and concurrent runs will be changed during the busy season to equalize the opportunity to use resources. Please refer to the announcement of 2020/03/17 for details.
